Universal Background Checks
Michigan now requires background checks for all gun sales, including those between private parties. Background checks prevent those who shouldn't have a gun, such as those with a disqualifying criminal record or mental illness, from obtaining them.
2
Safe Storage
Michigan's new safe storage law requires that all firearms in homes with children be securely stored with a locking device. Guns are the #1 cause of death for children, and safe storage can significantly reduce youth firearm deaths.
3
Extreme Risk Protection Orders
Sometimes called a "red flag law," Extreme Risk Protection Orders are a way to temporarily disarm someone who has become a risk to themselves or others. If the order is followed, there is no criminal penalty.

The order can remove firearms from a situation, reduce the threat of violence, and creates an opportunity for people in crisis to get the help they need.
4
Protections for Domestic Violence Survivors
Michigan's new domestic violence survivor protection law states that all those convicted of domestic violence related crimes may not possess firearms for 8 years after the completion of their sentence.

Holding the Gun Industry Accountable
The gun industry is the only industry in Michigan that can't be held legally accountable when their products or practices harm the public. These shield laws need to be repealed so that families can have their day in court after irresponsible industry practices harm or kill their loved ones.

We advocate for these issues in Lansing, and consider the candidate's position when making an endorsement.
